here’s my two cents on elitism and how access issues affect the involvement of certain students in prestigious extracurriculars that can then feed them into prestigious universities.

most people are familiar with common extracurriculars that distinguish applicants to the likes of Ivy League universities and Oxbridge - you might do debate, MUN, or just be really good at STEM on a national level. But no one talks about how elitist some of those opportunities are and how difficult they can be for the average person to access. Lots of talented students aren’t represented at these competitions because students won’t have guidance, information, funds or support that enable them to compete.

I eventually made it into my national debate circuit but it was extremely difficult and took years to just be able to compete in invite-only debate leagues happening where I lived, and similarly my 3 years of devotion to world scholars cup (Google it if you haven’t heard of it before) was 100% the result of me pushing to compete even when I had no logistical or administrative backing from the school I was REPPING on a global level at these competitions. Imagine representing your high school at Yale but you had to do the registration paperwork yourself… it’s not the norm, I’ll tell you that much! If your teachers and school just manage those processes for you you are in fact lucky and privileged to have opportunities lots of people don’t :) and most intls at top universities were able to compete in these opportunities with relative ease because their schools facilitated that. But ya it’s hard!

as an international student at LSE here are my thoughts on why some students at top universities might appear harder working or somehow more intelligent than the average person. in my opinion these students are usually the product of very rigorous secondary school environments where working hard or simply being high achieving was the norm. some students are an exception but in my anecdotal experience most people here came from high performing schools and so have built up their discipline and work ethic over many years which explains why they got this far to begin with and why they are so successful during their time at university. some of us consider ourselves more “normal” but usually end up being pushed harder as a result of being surrounded by high achievers! so ya, if you don’t have an elite secondary school education, don’t compare yourself because you simply didn’t grow up in an environment that trained you to study 8 hours a day and all that jazz, whereas A LOT of students at elite universities come from that world. it’s not just international students coming from feeder schools, lots of UK students are too!

take a shot every time I say community ✨

on a real note this is what I think lies behind the bubbles of rich international students at top universities like LSE and even the Ivy League. a lot of the time they are well-connected with others from a similar background because they are simply more intentional about building friendships, mentoring younger students, and supporting one another. yes many international students are very wealthy and privileged (look at international student fees at LSE and you’ll understand that of course only a certain income level can even afford to attend) but they’re also lovely and kind and just want to help each other out.

hopefully more international students experience this but of course the size of a given national or cultural society at uni will differ, and that is again largely due to wealth being variable in different places around the world and subsequently fewer students from certain countries being represented at top universities in the UK and US. everything about the international student scene goes back to $$$
