Why have hundreds of semi-circular rock formations appeared in Spain?

And no, this isn’t the surface of the moon.

It’s actually Lanzarote!

These pits are protected by stone-walled structures called socos, and they're part of an ancient farming system that's still being used today to grow food in one of Europe's driest regions!

Here's how they work.

Farmers build these stone walls to shield crops from strong winds and prevent soil erosion.

They then cover the ground with sea sand and volcanic rock, which traps moisture in the soil!

The mulch captures dew and rainfall, preserving every precious drop in a place that only gets around 6 inches of rain per year!

Through this ancient system, they can grow grapes, sweet potatoes, figs, cereals, and legumes!

All of this without using any irrigation, which is super important, as around 70% of humanity's water use goes to irrigation in agriculture.

For example, to produce just 1kg of cheese, it uses over 5,000 litres of freshwater, the equivalent of flushing the toilet nearly 1,000 times.

As the world’s agricultural land is becoming increasingly degraded, Lanzarote is proving you can grow food without using vast amounts of water, or destroying soil, and that working with nature, not against it, can create strong food systems!

What if people could collect plastic waste, and swap it for a fresh meal?

Tackling poverty and pollution at the same time.

That’s exactly what Buy Food with Plastic is doing in parts of Ghana, India and Nicaragua.

People gather 20 plastic bottles, either from the streets or their homes, and bring them to a local collection point.

In exchange, they receive a balanced, nutritious meal provided by the local team!

And the plastic doesn’t just get shipped somewhere else or dumped.

It’s recycled locally into practical products like combs, blankets and cosmetic bags, creating sustainable jobs in the same communities, and funding more meals and cleanups!

And this really matters, because poverty and plastic pollution often hit the same places.

Plastic is the cheapest packaging available, but many low-income regions don’t have recycling systems, so waste piles up with nowhere to go.

But Buy Food with Plastic are already making a big impact!

They've provided 86,000 meals and recycled over 1 million plastic bottles so far.

This project was started by Anna and Khalil, and it's proving that circular solutions can address multiple crises at once, feeding communities, creating jobs, and cleaning up the environment!
