And the reality is that for many women labour is extremely intense.

When women are expecting something gentle and manageable, that intensity can feel shocking.

Personally I think it’s far better to prepare for the power and intensity of labour than to expect an easy ride and feel blindsided.

Birth can be calm.

But it can also be wild, primal and overwhelming.

And that doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong.

I love a ritual. It helps my body feel safe and relaxed. Pregnancy is such a powerful time to slow down, connect with your bump, and become more instinctive.

For me it starts with a bath. Epsom salts, low lights, and I listen to the Oxytocin Bubble while I soak. It fills my mind with calm and positive thoughts about the birth.

Afterwards I spend a few minutes rubbing my bump and thinking about my beautiful baby. I can literally feel the oxytocin moving through my body.

I also use smell anchors during this time. Scents are incredibly powerful for memory and I want my brain to associate these smells with calm so I can access that feeling during labour.

I would love to say I do this every night. The reality is I have children and life is busy. But three evenings a week I make space for this and it has become really special.
