Hundreds of people marched through central Cape Town last Saturday (February 28), for the city’s annual Pride Parade and Mardi Gras, celebrating queer visibility while calling for greater LGBTQ+ equality and safety across Africa.

Participants waved rainbow flags and banners as they moved through the city to music, dancers and performers, and organisers said the event drew people from South Africa and neighbouring countries.

Despite the festive atmosphere, marchers stressed that Pride remained a political act. Many highlighted ongoing discrimination and warned of what they see as a rollback of protections for queer people.

Participants from across the region said attending the parade was also an act of solidarity with those unable to march openly in countries like Uganda, Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania.

Mattéo Garguilo (he/him) is a 22-year-old LGBTQ+ activist from France and co-president of ACT - an organisation seeking to ban so-called conversion therapies across the European Union. ACT is behind the European Citizens' Initiative that gathered more than one million signatures in favour of an EU-wide ban of these practices in the bloc.

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, is expected to give an answer to the campaign next May, but it does not have to propose a ban. And even if it does bring forward a plan to outlaw these practices - which queer activists describe as a form of torture - it is still unclear what this ban could look like. Some fear it might only cover sexual orientation and leave out gender identity, leaving trans people unprotected.

If the Commission does propose a ban, it would then have to be passed by both the European Parliament and the Council, where all 27 EU member states are represented. So far, only eight member states have banned conversion therapies at a national level.

Turkey's justice minister is drafting a bill that would criminalise any public statement that "publicly encourages, praises or promotes attitudes and behaviours contrary to innate biological sex and general morality", as well as unauthorised sex reassignment surgeries and same-sex engagement and wedding ceremonies, according to local media. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has warned that the "traditional family" is at risk from what he and his party colleagues call "LGBT propaganda". But human rights activists in the country say that, if passed, the draft legislation would only worsen the situation of LGBTQ+ Turks after years of repression against Pride marches across Turkey.
