Sardines might not be everyone’s favourite food…

But they’re one of the most nutritious foods you can eat.

They’re packed with omega-3 DHA (a nutrient many of us don’t get enough of), which plays an important role in brain health, eye health and overall wellbeing. If you eat the bones, they’re also an excellent source of calcium.

The problem? Most people don’t love the taste.

My solution? Exposure therapy.

We do it with our kids all the time. We offer foods again and again, without pressure, trusting that familiarity helps build acceptance over time.

So why not do the same for ourselves?

If sardines feel like a hard no, don’t start with a whole tin. Start with half a sardine or one sardine mixed through a fish you already enjoy, like tuna, salmon or mackerel. Add plenty of flavour, then gradually increase the amount over time.

That’s exactly what I did here.

🥣 For Will:
• Tuna
• ½–1 sardine
• Greek yoghurt (or mayonnaise)
• Squeeze of lemon

🌶️ For me:
• Tuna
• Extra sardines (I used @stockmerchant )
• mayonnaise (I used @undividedfoodco )
• Hot sauce
• Red onion
• Sesame seeds

But there was something else going on too.

Will was a bit grumpy, and when kids are tired, emotional or dysregulated, it’s usually not the best time to make the meal itself the focus.

So instead of talking about the food, we pulled out our conversation cards and focused on connecting.

Within minutes he had lightened up, we were chatting, laughing and enjoying our time together. The food became background noise.

And as it turns out, that’s often when new foods feel safest to try. Same meal. Same table. A little bit of exposure, and a little bit of connection.
