I try to take every opportunity to remind my children that I don’t know everything. It’s always a dope moment to learn something together.

I’m not perfect or all-knowing, so please don’t expect to turn into an adult who is.

These noodles came out pretty good btw.
I don’t beat my kids, it’s just not my ministry. I don’t find that to be an effective behavior modification strategy.

I am the parent that will firmly grab you, squeeze your arm or bring your face close to my face.

If you think I’m joking an start cracking jokes, I will firmly remind you that I’m dead serious.

If you’re disrespectful, I will abruptly end your fun so that you can sit and think.

I will always hug up on you, but I’ll remind you that your behavior is unacceptable.

I’ve never let anyone push me around, and I’m NEVER letting a brokie who can’t wipe their own a$$ mistake me for a sucker.

I say all of that to say, I have no problem being very firm in redirecting my children’s behavior.
Many of us have been conditioned to have a poor relationship with rest. We admire it as a concept, but reject it as an experience.

We fill our free time with stuff and resent others for not doing the same.

We shame and guilt our partners, children or anyone else who dares to challenge our distorted relationship with stillness with their own peaceful reality.

So now, I like to practice doing nothing. Just observing or simply being.

I don’t have to interact constantly. My nervous system doesn’t seem to care for it much.
A few things that I do while raising the oldest daughter:

1. Little siblings are attention stealers so inside jokes, individual cuddle time, and dates with just us are necessary.

2. “That’s so nice baby, but that’s not your job. You don’t have to do that” is a common phrase around here.

3. We make room for her to vent really mean frustrations around being an older sibling. Those feelings need a place to go.

3b. The little sibling can’t be around to hear those frustrations, though.

4. I’m light on the “you’re older, you are supposed to set the example” message sometimes. She’s still learning to be a person too.

5. The little one is my child, not hers.

6. Gotta help them manage those challenges around control. It’s okay if people don’t want to do what you want them to do.

7. Sacrifice is not the way that you earn love around here. You don’t have to give something up to feel that you belong.

This was a proud moment, but I reminded her that it’s ok to with the game next time. You’ll still be and amazing person and lil sis will be ok.
