⚠️ Trigger warning: blood 🩸

why i walk around london carrying mysterious tubes 🧪🐭

i work with the immune system and my phd focused on creating a new type of car t cell called SL4Y cells 💅

t cells are your immune system’s attack soldiers. they find and destroy dangerous cells. car t cells are t cells that scientists upgrade so they’re better at spotting specific targets like cancer cells.

“in vivo” experiments mean testing things inside a living body (not just in a lab dish) to see what actually happens in a whole organism. i inject these engineered cells into mice to see if they work, survive, and are safe in a real biological system.

anyway that’s what i’ve been up to, if you’re curious 😇

another week in the bank 🚀😈

i’m laying a solid foundation 🧱 this week felt sooooo good, my sessions were loads of fun and aside from one unfortunate misread of a swim set on friday night i nailed every single one✨

Today is International Women in Science and STEM Day 🧬✨

My path into STEM was actually pretty linear.

I did triple science, maths and english at school, very heavy STEM energy, and I always knew I wanted to be a scientist. I grew up watching Bones and wanted to be like Dr Brennan or Abby from NCIS. I loved the logic and the problem solving. I kept following what genuinely interested me through my degrees and that led me to cancer research.

STEM needs more women, not as a statistic or diversity headline, but because science is better when it reflects the world it serves. We ask different questions. We see different gaps. We bring different perspectives. And we belong here.

I would not be where I am without the women who shaped me.

Margaret, my undergraduate supervisor and now friend, who taught me what excellent science looks like and what confidence as a scientist feels like.
@shayingibson and @rhiannaosullivan, who got me through my Master’s.
@starfishcantswim @jessica_ohara and @scox2908, two incredible scientists I shared two hilarious years with.
And now @daisy_gresh, who inspires me daily and who I would not have made it through my PhD without.

I am so grateful to people, places and opportunities that allow me to inspire girls into STEM and show that scientists do not have to look a certain way. There is no one type of scientist. So here’s to challenging the boys club idea one pink graph at a time 💅.

Along the way, I have faced misogyny, self doubt and failure. But all of that made me resilient.

You do not have to change who you are to belong in STEM. You do not have to shrink yourself to be taken seriously. You can be ambitious, driven and kind.

And you can absolutely take up space.

If even one girl sees this and thinks maybe I could do that too, then it is worth it. 💫
