One of the most important things you can teach your dog is how to be comfortable being left alone.

It might not feel like training, but it can prevent some really serious behaviour problems later on.

Start by making sure your dog has a calm, safe place to settle — whether that’s a crate or a bed they’re used to relaxing on.

Then practise leaving for short periods at first.

Step out of the room, leave the house for a few minutes, and gradually build up the time.

The goal is for your dog to learn that you leaving is normal and nothing to worry about.

Try not to make a big fuss when you leave or when you come back.

The calmer and more routine it feels, the easier it is for your dog to relax.

Teaching independence early can make a huge difference in preventing things like separation anxiety later on.

I get asked this a lot… “If you think Labradors are the best dogs in the world… why did you get a German Shepherd?”

The honest answer is that Labradors probably are the best dogs for most people.

They’re trainable, stable, eager to please, and generally just brilliant family dogs.

German Shepherds are a bit different. They’re incredible dogs, but they usually need a more experienced owner.

They’re powerful, sensitive, very intelligent, and they notice everything going on around them.

With the wrong guidance they can become a lot to handle, but with the right leadership they’re phenomenal.

The other reason is something a bit more personal.

I’ve always had a rule that I don’t get the same breed twice in a row. It just helps me feel like I’m not trying to replace a dog that meant a lot to me.

Every dog gets their own chapter. So this time I worked with what I genuinely believe is one of the best German Shepherd breeders in the world… and Reggie has turned out to be one of the best dogs I’ve ever had.

Different breed, different personality, but an amazing dog all the same.
