Tulips are one of the clearest examples of how timing, structure and forward planning shape the outcome. These were planted in November, within the correct UK window, to ensure strong root establishment and clean, healthy growth come spring.

I use a dual approach. Rows in the garden for cutting efficiency, and raised beds in front of the greenhouse for a more considered, ornamental display. The beds from @harrodhorticultural allow for depth, drainage and control, which all support consistent performance.

Protection is part of the system. Netting through winter prevents disruption at a critical stage, keeping the crop on track.

Variety selection is equally important. By integrating early and late tulips, I’m extending the flowering window and creating a reliable succession rather than a single peak. It’s a more strategic way of growing, and it keeps the garden productive for longer.

As soon as the tulips finish, they’re lifted and the space is reset with dahlias. No gaps, no downtime, just a continuous cycle.

This is what happens when you treat your garden with a clear plan.
Right timing. Right sequencing. Consistent results.

Flowers are replaced twice a week at work to keep everything looking fresh and at its best. This is how I change them over.

Tulips don’t stop once they’re cut. They carry on growing in the vase and will open quickly in a warm room, so what you put in today won’t look the same in a few days.

I space the stems out so they’re not touching and angle them in different directions. It gives them room to move and stops everything becoming crowded as they grow.

It’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference to how they hold and how long they look good. 🌷

If you want a garden full of flowers, April is where it begins.

This is the month to sow straight into the soil, right where your plants will grow. No fuss, no moving them later, just sow and grow!

Start with well-prepared ground. Fine, crumbly, and free of weeds. Sow lightly, cover gently, and water in. It’s a small job now that makes all the difference in a few weeks’ time.

Hardy annuals are perfect for this. Cornflowers, poppies, nigella. They settle better when they’re not disturbed and will reward you with stronger stems and a more natural look.

Keep going every couple of weeks and you’ll have a steady flow of flowers right through the season. 🌸x
