I was filling my UK cupboards with familiarities from home. So many people would run to Sephora when over in the USA but I was always the girl running down the street to the CVS, the Walgreens or the Duane Reades of the world. There comes a point in every tall girl’s life where she has to make a decision. Do I embrace my height and decide everyone is going to stare so I might as well give them something bright and beautiful to stare at. Or… I’m going to try my best to blend in by wearing muted colors and slumping in the background. At this point I think it’s obvious I chose the former.

I’m a firm believer that nothing happens by accident. For some reason I was given this height. That means I’ve never ever been able to hide, in any room. For decades I hated standing out. I wish, with all my might, that I could get those decades back.

I can’t. But, I can help the younger generation understand that being forced to stand out is an actual blessing. Just take my word on this and embrace and believe that as soon as you can in this life. It makes all the difference…

It was always my dream to be a mom. Specifically, I wanted to be a mom that was as amazing as mine. In truth, I knew I’d never live up to it. I won the mom lottery. And today, I celebrate her.

But I also wanted to say that I know there are a lot of women like me who sit with a little sadness today at dreams not realised. There are no words that I can offer to comfort or quiet that sadness. It is real.

I can tell you, however, that as I’ve aged I’ve grown to accept that maybe I didn’t have my own children so that there was room for me to be an aunt, a dog mom, a caregiver or a helper to friends in times of need with their own children. I’ve hidden the sadness away as best as I can and replaced it with a feeling of privilege for the way in which I can show up for others.

Happy Mother’s Day to all, in whichever form you mother. ❤️

(More than anything though… I’ll always be a dog mom. And Brody and I had a moment this morning for our Boomer dog, who we lost last October. These were hard videos to rewatch but I’m so grateful I have them).
